Smoke comes out of heather vents and fills the house if the heater and fireplace are both on.

Ca, United States

If I use my central heat alone it is fine.

If I use my fireplace alone it is fine.

No backdraft issues at all.

But if I use them at the same time or if the fireplace is still smoldering when I turn on the heat the house fills completely with smoke in less that 5 min.  My house was built in 87 and the chimney appears to just be galvanized metal tubing so I know it’s not a cracked concrete or brick chimney issue.

How and why does this happen?

How can I fix it?

And roughly how much will it cost?

If you have smoke transference thru the heater vents it is time to call out a professional sweep and have the entire system assessed to ensure all is correct and there are no breaks within the system.
It is better to have spent the money and find you are OK then to continue on with a possible hazardous system
