rock chimney sinking cottage

Michigan, United States

We have an old cottage with a hand built stone fireplace and chimney that is probably 18 feet high.

All of it is stone and was built in the early 1900’s. We are noticing our floor dropping and the windows curving and have been told to remove most of the upper chimney to reduce the weight on the cottage.

Is this possible to do?

Is this what we should do?

If the chimney was properly supported on a foundation , there should be no reason to remove it as the weight is supposed to be supported by the foundation/footings.
If the entire cottage is adjusting, you have a structure foundation problem, time to call in an engineer to check the entire foundation of the cottage/building.
