moving chimney

pa, United States

Our chimney seems to be moving.

There is a significant gap between the hearth and the chimney “floor”.  It is odd because there is nothing to indicate the chimney is leaning - no gaps on outside wall and no appearance of the chimney moving relative to roof or flashing.

Do I consult a chimney sweep or a foundation specialist or a structural engineer?

If there is a gap between the hearth [floor of fireplace] and the extension then something has shifted.
I might be the footings beneath the fireplace itself, go into the basement ans see if the fireplace is on a full masonry column or a bracket.
If the hearth is separated from the fireplace itself [ and it is not a mortar shrinkage issue] then you will need to fill that void with masonry. You should have a chimney professional out to assess the situation as a properly built fireplace and hearth extension should never separate.
Can you possible send me a pic??
