A small amount of smoke exiting the chimney is normal for any fuel. If you have an excess then something is wrong with the combustion of the fuel and the venting.
When you have ANY appliance on [ wood / oil / natural gas] then all you should see is heat vapour coming from the chimney.
I would contact my chimney sweep to see if A/ the chimney needs sweeping and B? if you have had a small chimney fire
Then, if your chimney tech is not oil certified, have your fuel provider come out and ensure the fuel/air mixture is proper for your system. AFTER the chimney is cleaned.
