after consultation with a qualified chimney sweep/wood burner installer he stated that our chimney stack was not tall enough for a wood burner because of the clearance between the chimney and the roof. Does that clearance apply for a gas fire

Is it possible to put a woodstove in an old fireplace and run the exhaust vent through the fireplace? The fireplace itself is old and needs repairs. Will the fireplace need to be repaired and cleaned before the woodstove instalation? Thanks for the help.

The metal on the trash burner is oval so the chimney leading from it is oval thusly the damper has to be oval doesn’t it? There are small holes on either side of the cast iron on the lip of the burner that appear to have had the crosspiece from a damper inserted into it. The damper is missing and is there such a thing as a oval damper for the trash burner.  thank-you for your attention

Downdraft when starting woodstove

NY, United States

I have a Quadrafire woodstove perhaps 15 years old.  Chimney is all metal, correct height capped and cleaned at start of season.  This year I experience significant drowndrafts when trying to start a fire.  I can feel cold air comming down into firebox.  Tried rolled paper, small starter fires, slightly open firedoors, etc to start draft,  but end up filling the house with smoke.  Where should I look for a solution?
